Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these drugs should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
